The Cordelia Dream and Settling

"I said name your instrument, as I said to all my children. Them all, she said, for the dog-hearted one is insatiable. Them all. But being mediocre she settled for the violin"

After the traditional January expectations of doing it all have faded into February reality, March gives the chance to do the achievable instead. The Cordelia Dream features a musician too stuck to create music; that perspective is extremely relatable right now.

A two hander with a tense back and forth between the characters, I picked this one up in Dublin while looking for monologues, drawn in by the juicy paragraphs. I was not disappointed. Marina Carr fills The Cordelia Dream with interesting language, the simple setting and internal drive of this play left me fixated on the shifting power dynamic between two obstinate characters, named only as 'woman' and 'man'.

In a year of settling and limitations, it feels good to dream and read.
